OSU Opens Big Ten in a Close Loss to #21 Michigan

The OSU women’s volleyball team (9-4 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) lost 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 20-25) to No. 21 Michigan (13-0, 1-0) Wednesday night in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The contest, in St. John Arena, was played in front of 2,171 fans. OSU’s Anna Szerszen scored a match-high 15.5 points for Ohio State with Kristen Dozier adding 10. Szerszen had a team-high 10 kills, one ace serve, three solo blocks and three assists. Dozier posted eight kills, a solo block and two assists. For Michigan, Beth Karpiak recorded a team-high 13 points with 12 kills and two assist blocks.
After a Veronica Rood kill gave Michigan a 1-0 lead in the first set, Ohio State kills from Kelli Barhorst and Szerszen, a Barhorst-Allie Schwarzwalder block and a solo block from Szerszen gave the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead. Michigan, trailing 7-5, used kills from Karlee Bruck and Megan Bower to tie the set at seven. OSU took a 10-7 lead with two Michigan errors and an Ashley Hughes kill. With the Buckeyes leading 19-16, an OSU error and kills from Rood and Lexi Zimmerman tied the set at 19. Three ties later, at 22-all, A Karpiak kill made it 23-22, Michigan. The Wolverines reach set point with a Juliana Paz kill at 24-22. Michigan won the set, 25-22, with a Bruck solo block. The Wolverines hit .140 for the set to .054 for Ohio State.
Ohio State opened set two with a 3-0 lead off a Wolverine error, a Chelsea Noble kill and a solo block by Barhorst. A Rood-Bruck block and a Kerry Hance ace serve cut the lead to 3-2. A Noble kill made it 4-2. Two OSU errors tied the set at four. The Buckeyes took a 5-4 lead with a Noble kill. A Karpiak kill tied the set at five. A Buckeye error gave Michigan a 6-5 lead. OSU tied the set at six with a Dozier kill. Tied at seven, a Paz kill and an OSU error gave the Wolverines a 9-7 lead. A kill from Schwarzwalder and a Michigan error tied the set at nine. At 10-all, a Michigan error and a Barhorst-Szerszen block gave Ohio State a 12-10 lead. Michigan tied the set at 12 with a Zimmerman kill and a block by Rood. The Wolverines took a 13-12 lead with a Karpiak kill. A Szerszen kill tied the set at 13. A Bower kill and a Karpiak-Zimmerman block put the Wolverines ahead, 15-13. A Wolverine error cut their lead to one at 15-14. A Zimmerman kill, a Sloane Donhoff ace serve and a Paz kill put the Wolverines ahead, 18-14. With Michigan leading, 23-19, kills from Noble and Szerszen and a Wolverine error cut the lead to one at 23-22. A Rood kill made it set point at 24-23. A Dozier kill stopped the set point at 24-23. Michigan won the set, 25-23, with a Rood kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State out hit Michigan, .200 to .179, in the set.
Tied at four in set three, a Zimmerman kill and two blocks from Paz and Bruck gave the Wolverines a 7-4 lead. A Szerszen kill stopped the run a 7-5. Three Buckeye errors opened a 10-5 Wolverine lead. Ohio State cut into the lead at 11-7 with a Betsy Hone kill and ace serve. A Rood kill made it 12-9. A Schwarzwalder kill and a Michigan error cut the lead to one at 12-11. Michigan responded off an OSU error and two kills from Paz to lead, 15-11. At 20-16, Michigan, a Dozier kill, a Szerszen solo block and a Wolverine error cut the lead to one at 20-19. An OSU error made it 21-19. A Szerszen kill made it 21-20. An OSU error and two ace serves from Donhoff set match point at 24-20. Michigan won the set, 25-20, off an OSU error to win the match, 3-0. The Wolverine hit .219 for the set to .167 for Ohio State.
For the match, Michigan hit .175 to .143 for Ohio State. The Wolverines had a 40-38 margin in kills and a 4-2 advantage in ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up seven service errors to three for the Wolverines. Defensively, Michigan had a 50-40 advantage in digs with OSU’s Kaila Calhoun collecting a match-high 14. Hance recorded 13 and Zimmerman 12 for Michigan. At the net, Ohio State had a 12-8 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Szerszen posted a match-high six with a career-high three solo blocks and three assists. At setter, Michigan’s Zimmerman recorded a match-high 29 assists. OSU Hone had 22 with Hughes adding seven.
Ohio State now travels to Michigan State (8-3) to face the Spartans at 6:30 p.m. EDT in the Breslin Center.
Team Ready for Big Ten Season after Sweep of Kent State

The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (9-3 overall), with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Kent State (10-3), won the Kent State/Mizuno open Saturday night in the M.A.C. Center. OSU’s Anna Szerszen posted a match-high 14.5 points for the Buckeyes with Kelli Barhorst adding 11.5. Szerszen had 12 kills, two solo blocks and one assist in the match while Barhorst added nine kills, two solo blocks and one assist. Kent State’s Ashley Feutz scored a team-high 12.5 points with 12 kills and an assist block. Lauren Jones contributed 11.5 points with 11 kills and an assist block.
OSU Volleyball Team 2-1 after Youngstown State Win

The women’s volleyball team (2-1 overall; 0-0 Big Ten) concluded its play in the Sports Imports Classic with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15) victory over Youngstown State (1-2 overall: 0-0 Horizon League) Saturday night in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes improve to 5-0 all-time against the Penguins. In the match, the Buckeyes scored first in each of the three sets, allowing the Penguins to tie the score only once early in the second set. For Ohio State, sophomores Kaila Calhoun and Katie Dull led the scoring with 15.5 and 14.5 points respectively.
Ohio State came out aggressive, scoring five unanswered points against Youngstown State in the first set of the match. Junior Kristen Dozier won possession of the ball with a kill and went on to serve three-consecutive points from two Penguin attack errors and a Dull kill. The duo of Dozier and Dull would team up again in the match. The pair helped Ohio State a 20-10 lead as Dozier held the serve for six points with the help of Dull’s three-consecutive kills. The Buckeyes finished the set with a Calhoun kill from a Susan Halverson pass, taking the set, 25-17. In the first set, Ohio State out hit YSU, 15-12.
In the second set of the match, Youngstown State kept it close but Ohio State again prevailed, 25-21. At the net, the Buckeyes received help from Calhoun, Dull and junior captain Chelsea Noble. Calhoun led the attack effort with six kills in the second set while Noble added five and Dull three. The two teams traded points until a kill from Calhoun brought freshman Sarah Mignin up to serve, taking the set to 7-4. The score remained close as YSU fought back from a five-point deficit to within two off a Barbosa kill and two Buckeye attack errors. Set point came at 24-21. Ohio State won possession and the set with two Calhoun kills. In the second set, the Buckeyes held a 20-10 hitting advantage.
The Buckeyes secured the win with a 25-15 third set. Similar to the first set, Ohio State won the first point of the set, this time with a kill from Dull. The squad made quick time of the Penguins, jumping to a 10-3 lead from kills by Calhoun, Dozier, Dull and Allie Schwarzwalder, as well as service aces from Dull and Laura Kastein. Showing her athleticism, Dull won possession for Ohio State using her foot to pop the ball up and continue the rally. She would go on to end the rally with a kill and follow with her second ace of the set, putting the squad ahead, 19-11. Freshman Maria Ralston served the Buckeyes to set point but a kill by Youngstown State’s Haley Kapferer kept the Penguins alive at 24-15. Ohio State setter Betsy Hone found Dozier at the net the following play to end the set and the match. In the third, Ohio State had 17 kills to YSU’s seven.
Next up for the team, in Kansas Ohio State plays Coastal Carolina and Idaho State at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm, respectively, September 4th at the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic. The Buckeyes then play Cal State Bakersfield and Wichita State at 8:30 am and 8:00 pm September 6th. Ohio State continues on the road with a pair of games on the West Coast. The team takes on Loyola Marymount at 7:00 pm September 10th and finishes the trip with a 7:00 pm match against Southern California September 12th.
OSU Women's Volleyball Picked to Finish 9th By Conference

The Big Ten Conference released the 2008 Preseason Poll, ranking Ohio State ninth in the poll conducted by the conference coaches. Five-time defending Big Ten Champion and last year's National Champion Penn State was tabbed for the fourth consecutive time as the preseason favorite. Minnesota was picked second and Wisconsin third.
Last year Ohio State finished the season with a 13-16 overall record and finished ninth in the Big Ten Conference with a 7-13 record. Under first year head coach Geoff Carlston, the Buckeyes return four starters from last season: Middle blocker Kristen Dozier and outside hitters Anna Szerszen, Katie Dull and Kaila Calhoun.
Ohio State will open the 2008 season hosting the Sports Imports Classic Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug. 30. The Buckeyes open the Classic at 11:00 am Friday vs. Toledo and close out the first day of play against Xavier at 7:30 pm Ohio State will play Youngstown State Saturday at 6:00 pm following the Ohio State –Youngstown State football game at noon.

Captains Named for 2008 Season

Coach Carlston has announced Ashley Hughes and Chelsea Noble have been named the captains of the 2008 team. Hughes has played two years with Ohio State, seeing action in 17 matches. Noble transferred from Tennessee and sat out the 2007 season. She played in 31 matches in 2006 for the Volunteers and 32 as a freshman.
Buckeyes Perfect At Team Indy

The Buckeyes played in Team Indy in Indianapolis this weekend and came away undefeated. In the tournament, Ohio State defeated Grand Valley State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21), Southern Illinois, 2-1 (22-25, 25-21, 15-10), Hillsdale, 2-1 (21-25, 25-18, 15-11) and IPFW, 2-1 (25-21, 22-25, 15-11).
You might note the games were played to 25. Under NCAA rule changes for the fall, games are now called sets and they are played to 25 points rather than 30 in the first four games.
Ohio State Names New Coach

Goeff Carlston has been named coach of the Ohio State women's volleyball team. He is replacing Jim Stone who announced his retirement mid-season after 25 years. Carlston spent the past five years as coach of the Ohio University Bobcats. During that time, he led the Bobcats to five NCAA tournament appearances, won five MAC titles, compiling a 144-22 record.

Last year, we added some OSU Women's Volleyball coverage to our web site. We did not market or promote it in any way and yet we got 300 hits on our 2007 Volleyball Home Page. We look forward to bringing you even more coverage for the upcoming 2008 season.
