OSU Finds Itself At #11 and Poised for Pasadena
November 8, 2009 9:00 pm EST

When the year started, Ohio State had goals to win the Big Ten outright and play in Pasadena in January.  With two games to go in the season, they can still achieve both goals.  Of course that means they need to beat Iowa and Michigan, and the game in Pasadena is really the Rose Bowl and not the National Championship.  There once was a time when going to the Rose Bowl was a great accomplishment, and OSU should still consider this a great achievement.  After all, the Buckeyes have only managed to get to the Rose Bowl once in the past 24 seasons.  The Penn State game also marks only the second time under Tressel when they beat a team ranked higher than the Bucks (Miami was the other team).  So let's hope that the team continues to build from the Nittany Lion victory and carries it into the final two games.

For the overall BCS, Texas and Alabama fill-flop again, but it doesn't really matter.  Texas will go to the National Championship game if they win out and the winner of the SEC will get the other spot.  TCU manages to move up to the 4th spot but will probably need more help than just the teams above them losing.  The Bearcats hold serve at the 5th spot, but they too will be on the outside looking in come January.  When this season ends, it is possible there will still be 4 unbeaten teams, three of them wishing there was a playoff for them to have a chance at a national title.

Iowa Climbs to 4th, OSU 15th in Latest BCS Poll
November 1, 2009 8:30 pm EST

Quick, tell me what the football teams from Richmond(Division AA), Clemson(5-3), Notre Dame(6-2), South Florida(6-2), Virginia Tech(5-3) and Cal(6-2) have in common?  Answer: they are all rated above Ohio State in the latest  Sagarin computer poll.  Of course so are 26 teams in all.  Sagarin is one of the polls that make up the BCS computer rankings.  I don't now what this poll measures how can these teams be higher than Ohio State.

This is not to say Ohio State should be higher or is getting a bad shake.  I am just going back to the subject of "how valid are these computers?"  Considering the amount of money that is involved, shouldn't somebody be looking into the integrity of how we elect the top two teams in college football.  That could be a subject of an entire series of articles.  Overall, three teams above Ohio State lost, unfortunately we were only able to move up one more spot.  That will be resolved though if we defeat Penn State this coming week.

Iowa Climbs to 4th, OSU 15th in Latest BCS Poll
October 25, 2009 6:45 pm EST

In spite of their last second win in East Lansing and their 8th place position in the polls, Iowa has climbed to 4th in the current BS standings.  This is due to their 1st place ranking in the computer polls.  I wonder how that computer rates the Hawkeyes narrow escape over Northern Iowa.  OSU also moved up, two spots after the win against Minnesota.  Obviously it is too little to late for the Bucks, but it would be nice to get back in the top ten.  Wins over Iowa and Penn State would do just that.  Florida remains in the top spot in spite of their questionable wins.  Alabama needed two blocked field goals to beat the Volunteers by two.  USC still remains the highest rated one-loss team.

Cheer the Teams that Help the Buckeye Cause

The first official BCS standings will be published after this weekend's games.  Boise State's narrow victory may drop them in the minds of the voters.  So a big win over Purdue might help OSU leap over the undefeated Broncos.  Who else do we need to see lose?  Basically anyone within five spots of the Buckeyes.  Any team above us will drop below us with a loss.  Teams that are just below us may be above us on some voter ballots so teams just below us will help our cause by losing too.  Not saying that we are still in the national picture but if we keep winning convincingly, you never know.  Two weeks ago, we were in 11th in the BCS, last week OSU was 9th.  Now they have moved to 8th place.

The Bucks Moving Up
October 11, 2009 10:00 pm EST

Usually about this time each year I want to wear my Scarlet tinted glasses, proclaim Ohio State is not getting a fair shake in the polls, and proclaim an SEC conspiracy.  Although the fix 'is' still in for the SEC, the polls may be a bit generous to our Buckeyes and their struggling offense.  They say defense wins championships and our defense may be strong enough to win the Big Ten, but in terms of a national presence, you have to be able to put points on the board with your offense.  Let's not get too carried away concerning the last game though, Wisconsin was not 5-0 for nothing and hopefully the offense improves these next three weeks like it will need to face the November schedule.

Nationally this week we find Florida on top still although Alabama is starting to get more votes and recognition.  USC was this week's team to jump Boise State in the polls, even though they had a bye.  I hope our friends from the blue field, realize that unless every team in the SEC loses two games, they will not play in Pasadena in January.  USC is still in the running as well as Texas and Virginia Tech.  Ohio State seems to still be the next team in order after those but who knows what happens if Cincinnati finishes undefeated.

The new unofficial BCS will be published shortly, OSU has moved up to 8th now.  The real one starts next week.  Be sure to check out the other polls from the 'AP-USA-HARRIS POLLS' button above.

The BCS Standings Start in Two Weeks
October 4, 2009 10:30 pm EST

The first official BCS standings will be published in two weeks but we have for you what they look like after the first 5 weeks of the season.  In spite of the loss to USC, as well the unwavering love the media has with the SEC, Ohio State has managed to climb up to 9th in the Coaches poll and 8th in the Harris poll.  These two polls make up 2/3rds of the BCS formula.  One might think the Bucks are sitting pretty at this stage but the other 1/3rd of the poll is the accumulation of 6 different computer polls.  If you thought Mark May disliked the Buckeyes, that is nothing compared to the computers.  Hopefully as the season wears on, and the Buckeyes continue to win, our numbers will improve.
