Well, this week is a Saturday night game, so work won’t interfere in any way. It’s a road game and since it’s Indiana, none of my “Buckeye Brethren” who didn’t go to the game felt the need to throw a big party. So I’m home with the Mrs. and thought why not try a “stream of consciousness” type game summary this week? With laptop ready to go, we’ll just let the instantaneous thoughts flow as the action unfolds over in Bloomington.
Lamaar Thomas fakes reverse on opening kickoff- be careful with that ball…“Captain” Saine gets his night to a hot start with a 22-yard pickup against the grain- thanks to a nice block from his QB…Nice pass pro for Terrelle’s first dropback, but no one open and he gets a nice scramble to move the chains…Paul Keels says Dan Herron may not play at all tonight…Two runs into the line get nothing, and Posey can’t haul in a decent throw into the endzone on 3rd down. Aaron Pettrey absolutely nails a 47-yard field goal. I know it’s old news, but not giving Aaron a shot at the late 53-yarder against USC still gnaws at me…Andrew Miller is battling flu-like symptoms according to radio sideline man Marty Bannister and is home. Mike Adams is probably going the distance tonight…Nice return by Ray Fisher on the ensuing kickoff. Had he not lost his balance it would’ve been trouble…Thaddeus Gibson brings Willis down from behind on first run play. You better block him…Indiana punts away. Ray Small looks like he’s gonna catch it on the dead run but lets it go. Easy, Ray…Saine, then Pryor break off big chunks on the ground. Saine gets a great block from DeVier Posey…Throwback screen goes for naught. I like the call but Indiana had it sniffed out…Quick toss to Posey with blitz coming, he picks up the first with a nice move…Saine over the right side for another first down…Marty Bannister just mentioned that light rain was starting to fall in Bloomington. When the rain started in Columbus last week, Saine got revved up as well. He already has 70 yards on 7 carries…Duron Carter gets his first Buckeye touchdown on a slant from the left- nice throw by Terrelle. Between Duron and daddy Cris, they now have 28 career touchdowns…Ray Fisher motors to his 40 on another nice return. The Bucks’ kickoff coverage unit has been top notch, but Fisher will be a test…Quick out to Tandon Doss, but he coughs it up on a hit by Devon Torrence. Anderson Russell scoops it up…Jordan Hall spells Saine. Brandon had a pretty good collision with a DB on the last play before the Carter TD, wonder if he’s dinged?...Pryor is wrapped up but floats one to Jake Ballard to save the play…Timeout, Bucks. What is up with that? Apparently something is up with J.B. Shugarts as Marcus Hall is in the lineup for the first time…Big Ten Network is still showing a Buffalo Wild Wings spot while Paul and Jim are announcing the game…QB draw on 3rd-and-7 comes up short. Would’ve worked if Bryant Browning would get a block on Will Patterson…Hoosiers hit with an illegal substitution flag on the punt- first down, Bucks. Bill Lynch is spewing some leftover venom from that Michigan game ending…A couple of Jordan Hall runs gets a first down, but Mike Boren gives 5 back rocking out of his stance…Pryor can’t get away from Matt Mayberry and takes a 4-yard loss…Ray Small spins away from a defender on a quick out and gets eleven…Tress burns another timeout with 3rd-and-8 looming. Please tell me it’s not to set up a quarterback draw…Terrelle has Posey open down the sideline but DeVier stepped out before the ball got there and caught it out of bounds anyway…Pettrey doinks it off the right upright. If the field goal had been two yards further out, it’s good as it was hooking inward…Bucks have a 12-minute to 3-minute advantage with time of possession in this first quarter…Tandon Doss hauls in a long pass for 28 as Austin Spitler gets completely lost in coverage…Mitchell Evans with a run out of the “Wildcat” package as the first quarter ends. Nine quarters, no points given up by the “D”…
Jermale Hines out of the game, heading to the locker room. Orhian Johnson sees the field…Indiana getting momentum- Damarlo Belcher with a nice catch and Doss takes advantage of missed tackles for another chunk…1st and 10, Hoosiers at the 14. Doss with a one-handed snag to get the ball to the 7. Tremendous catch…Doss on a quick screen right stretches out and takes it in, taking Chimdi Chekwa for a ride. Stripes review it, but they got it right the first time. First TD since Stafon Johnson’s gamer for ‘SC…This time they do the reverse on the kickoff and Ray Small chugs to his 45. Both kick return units are making noise…Pryor snakes for 14, then Dane Sanzenbacher plucks a low throw for another first down to the 23…Pryor fires a dart to Posey for six, one of the best throws he’s made in Scarlet and Gray. 55 yards in 3 plays, answering Indiana’s 80-yard, 8-play march…Bucks have got to be averaging double digits per play…Bucks have 201 yards of total offense so far, 130 on the ground…Big Ten Network shows ’88 debacle as Anthony Thompson scored 4 TD’s in a 41-7 rout of OSU. I remember being ticked off that ABC stayed with the Dodgers/Mets baseball playoff until late in the first quarter of the football game. Afterwards I wondered why I had even bothered…”D” throws up a three-and-out, led by a TFL from Ross Homan…Saine back in to start this series, gets three on first down…Pryor escapes heat and manages to throw it out-of-bounds…TP keeps on the option for the first- boy, he hit that hole quick…Saine fumbles, but his knee was down…Terrelle cuts back on the option and moves the sticks again. Great block from Posey…Deep ball for Dane sails on by him, but his jersey got held- first down…Saine back on the bench talking to the trainer. No “Boom”, no Jermil Martin (flu)…Terrelle drops shotgun snap but gets 5…Greg Middleton drags TP down for a loss of 3…Terrelle takes off again but can only get to the 12. Designed run, he didn’t even look downfield. “Tresselball” bites us in the butt again as Pettrey hooks a 29-yard chipshot. QUIT PLAYING FOR FRIGGIN’ FIELD GOALS!!!!!...Dexter Larimore is down after the first down play. Looking at his right leg…Dex and Brandon Saine are named captains for this game (Dexter filling in for Kurt Coleman), and now they’re both banged up…Larimore not putting any weight on his right leg. Denlinger checks in…Indiana picks up first down out of hurry-up mode. I know Illinois got shut out, but they had their moments when they picked up the pace…Another Hoosier first down to midfield as clock ticks under three minutes. Home team gets the ball to start second half so “D” has got to step up…Denlinger makes a pick of a low Ben Chappell throw by dropping into coverage. Nice return to IU 39…Quick throw to Posey for 7, then Pryor works option for first down complete with a stiff arm. Austin Thomas gets a late hit out-of-bounds for 15 more…Ball at the 12, and Jordan Hall pounds for 4…Jim Lachey jokes that Austin Thomas might want to clear his schedule next Saturday after the Big Ten reviews that late hit…Zach Boren- TOUCHDOWN! A pass to the fullback for a score? Are you kidding me? Boren was option #2 as you watch Terrelle’s eyes on the replay, but TP found him…When was the last time two true freshman scored for OSU in the same game?...Marty Bannister reports that Dexter Larimore is done for the night…Pooch kickoff this time, keeping it out of Ray Fisher’s hands…Chappell rolls and hits Belcher to the Indiana 44, under a minute to go…Indiana runs out of gas with a third-down incompletion- no third-down conversions for the Hoosiers tonight…Indiana punts, Bucks take a knee, and we’re at the half up 24-7…Tress talks to BTN going off at the half. Uh, could someone get the coach a tissue?...Terrelle is 9 of 14 for 86 yards with the three TD tosses at the break…Saine- 10 carries for 80 yards; Pryor- 11 for 75…
Another decent return by Fisher to start the second half- out to the 32 before Donnie Evege wraps him up…Damarlo Belcher converts a 3rd-and-10 as Hines and Torrence are in the next county trying to defend him. Too much cushion…First third down conversion of the night for Indiana, but the next one isn’t so good- an Anderson Russell pick!...Saine gets a first down on two totes…Bucks face 3rd-and-3 but Terrelle throws an easy slant to Posey in the dirt…Fisher has to fair catch the punt at his own 5- nice job by Thoma…BTN analyst Glen Mason must be using Ron Franklin’s notes from last week as Aaron Pet-tree has become Aaron Pee-tree…Trea Burgess gets short yardage on second down and is stopped by all three Buckeye linebackers…Needing 5, Chappell hits Belcher for two but Ross Homan makes a great stop…Chris Hagerup, the Hoosier punter, drops the punt snap in the endzone and Robert Rose drops him for a safety…26-7 as the punt coverage unit rings up its second safety of the season…Ray Small brings free kick back to his 47. It’s time for a knockout blow, Tress…Sideline pass for Posey incomplete, and then Terrelle gets swarmed for a loss of 10. Here comes a run on 3rd-and-20…Well, TP took a look downfield but he has to scramble for 8…Duron Carter absolutely wipes out Justin Carrington…Jon Thoma is hit on the punt, but it’s called running into the kicker and wouldn’t have resulted in a first down, so Bucks decline it. Indiana ball at their own 15…Dexter Larimore has a right knee sprain. Done for the night, but will he be ready for Wisconsin next week?...Terrance Turner catches a pass three yards shy of first down but stretches through two defenders for the first…Austin Spitler gets an 9-yard sack, not buying Chappell’s play fake at all…Hoosiers need 12, but Turner can only get 10…Indiana punts and the hometown fans heartily boo “Lynchball”…Pryor juggles the snap on 2nd-and-7, but shakes a tackler and gets the first down. Hoosiers are looking nothing like the crew that battled Michigan down to the wire…Pryor gives a lot of ground on the scramble, yet gets a floater away which Brandon Saine grabs while practically laying on his back for a first down. When it’s going good….Slant to Lamaar Thomas gains a first down at the IU 25.
