WAL-MART CELEBRITIES FOR DIABETES PRESENTS
OHIO STATE VS. MICHIGAN: 106 YEARS OF RIVALRY
Honoring the 35th Anniversary of Archie Griffin’s first Heisman Trophy

In college football, the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is second to none. No matter the records, on that historical Saturday in November sports fans across the nation eagerly await the contest.  This year’s game marks the 106th year anniversary of the rivalry many consider the greatest in sports history.

The Wal-Mart Celebrities for Diabetes will bring together former Ohio State and Michigan players/coaches to celebrate the rivalry’s rich history on Thursday, November 19th from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café, 1421 Olentangy River Rd.

Buckeye legends John Hicks and Jack Tatum are serving as chair and honorary co-chair of the event. The proceeds raised will benefit the Central Ohio Diabetes Association.  This year’s event will honor two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin and the 35th anniversary of him earning the first award.

Griffin rushed for an OSU record 5,589 yards and 26 touchdowns and was the Buckeyes' starting tailback for four years, leading Ohio State to a 40-5-1 record and four Big Ten titles between 1972 and 1975. He started in four-consecutive Rose Bowls, the only player ever to do so, and was a three-time first-team All-American. Griffin was also a two-time pick as National Player of the Year by both United Press International and the Walter Camp Foundation and graduated a quarter early with a degree in industrial relations.

The Columbus native was a first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals. He played eight years of professional football, before returning to Columbus and joining the staff at Ohio State, where he currently serves as President of the Ohio State Alumni Association.

These two legendary schools combined have produced 18 national championships, 10 Heisman Trophy winners, 332 All-Americans and 62 members of the College Football Hall of Fame and 74 Big Ten Titles.

The event will allow Buckeye and Wolverine Fans to celebrate the 106th year tradition with a host of former Ohio State and Michigan alumni as they share their experiences on how “The Rivalry” impacted their lives and college football as a whole.

The official ceremony will allow each player to speak for up to 10 minutes about their experiences in “The Rivalry.” A brief question and answer session with the players will follow the event.  The evening festivities will also include live and silent auctions featuring sports memorabilia and an autograph session with the players, followed by dinner being served.

Corporate tables and individual tickets are available and other special guests are scheduled to attend. For more information call 614-884-4400 or visit celebritiesfordiabetes.org.

Tatum has also become an advocate in the fight against diabetes, establishing a fund named after him and participating in various fundraisers that support the Central Ohio Diabetes Association’s programs and services.

“The more I learn about the disease, the more I want to do.  I have dedicated myself to helping the Central Ohio Diabetes Association in their overall efforts.  I urge others to join me in the fight against diabetes,” Tatum said.
