Last Week: Hopefully all of you have had an opportunity to recover from the loss to Purdue. Keep in mind, you can't win them all and since Tressel has been at the helm, we usually win these type of games. Is this just a blip in the season or is it signal that there are serious issues that need to be addressed? Let's pray it is the former. As for our staff predictions, other than the OSU hit that everyone took, we did quite well. Rick and Steven were able to build on their leads, as they continue to make sound selections and provide excellent commentary for their explanations. Joe and I are pleased to be above the .500 mark again.
This Week: The second loss of the season obviously takes OSU out of the national championship picture (it is not as if we are LSU or anything) as well as an at-large BCS bid. But by winning out, we can still participate in the BCS parade at the Rose Bowl as the Big Ten Champions. Lets hope the Trojans are not sitting their waiting for us. We should take care of our own business first and that starts be winning homecoming over Minnesota. Coach Brewster's complaints about having to play in Columbus two straight years really doesn't fly with me. It is not as if the Gophers have dominated this series in the Dome. For our other games this week, we will include TCU at BYU. The Horned Frogs are still trying to crash the BCS party ahead of Boise State. As for me, I am rooting for TCU and this will be one of the types of wins that can help them 'leap frog' over the Broncos. Back in the Big Ten Iowa continues their brutal road schedule, facing the Spartans in East Lansing. We need both teams to lose to help our Big Ten cause and we don't play MSU, so root for the Hawkeyes here. On the west coast Oregon continues it's amazing recovery since the "brawl on the blue turf". This game could help shape the race in the Pac-10 and ultimately determine, who might be playing in Pasadena January 1. Finally, we share our thoughts on the Texas-Missouri match-up. The Longhorns seem to have an easy road to the Big 12 Championship game and a spot in the BCS Title game, but there is a lot of games that can trip you if you are not careful (do they have the Boilermakers on their schedule). At any rate, here are our thoughts and predictions, feel free to email us your feedback as well.
Here we go, Good Luck to All - Gregg
2009
Minnesota @
Ohio State
(Steven: Our destiny remains in our own hands having Iowa, PSU and Michigan left to go. This sounds like a tad bit familiar, (we say it every time, don’t we?), but maybe this one is the loss that finally gets Coach thinking, “HMMM, maybe putting our QB’s development in the hands of an elevated GA might not be the best of ideas”… or “HMMM, you know, the O-line hasn’t been the same since we tried to go to this stupid zone blocking scheme, maybe we should try something, or SOMEONE different”. My prediction is much like last week’s, and maybe this is just how I would run things, but to be successful, the Bucks need to establish the run, control the clock, dominate time of possession… and Pryor needs to learn to fall the heck down when being sacked. How he’s gotten through the Jim Tressel school of conservative football not learning how to a) Take a sack without fumbling, b) throw the ball away effectively, I’ll never know. Bucks win, but it ain’t gonna be pretty – 24-20 As a side note, how did the refs give the ball back to Purdue on the fumble when the receiver’s progress was stopped, but when Pryor was “in the grasp” they allowed his fumble to stand? Dumb.)
(Gregg: Minnesota has the worst offense in the Big Ten, and the second worse offense. Yet the Gophers beat Purdue 35-20. It is an upside world we live in these days. In spite of their last performance, I will again give the edge to the Buckeyes but they don't cover.)
(Pete: Minnesota has one of the best receivers in the country and one of the most bi-polar quarterbacks
around. I still can't help to think the Gophers have a chance. OSU 21 - UM 20)
(Rick: OSU will not play as good as they can, but will do better than last week. OSU by 10.)
(Dr. Mark: OSU - I remain concerned about line play and poor throwing mechanics.)
(Brent: Pick: OSU - Defense redeems itself while offense continues to be offensive)
WINNER : Ohio State
TCU @
BYU
(Rick: This is for a BCS game. I do not think that TCU has the complete team to keep up with BYU. I like BYU by 6.)
(Steven: This could well be the downfall of another BCS buster. Takin’ the home team in this one, BYU 38-33.)
(Pete: BYU's incredible offense will face a stout TCU defense. Should be fun. BYU 38 - TCU 34)
(Gregg: TCU needs a signature win to help their BCS cause, the Cougars would
give them just that. The Frog defense should be enough for the victory.)
(Brent: Pick: TCU - Flip a coin on this one)
WINNER : TCU
Iowa @
Mich State
(Rick: Iowa will stay on track this weekend with that close game. It will come down to a late 4th quarter score before Iowa wins by 3.)
(Steven: Michigan State is their normal Jekyll & Hyde selves this year. They could very easily beat Iowa. No team in the B11
is unstoppable this year. Just like the Michigan game, it will take a tremendous emotional effort for Sparty to beat the
Hawkeyes. Unfortunately, Coach Dantonio has not shown that he can consistently get his team up each and every
week. They fight hard, but falter late as Iowa remains unbeaten – Iowa 27-22.)
(Gregg: Reality states it doesn't matter which team wins in terms of what helps the Buckeyes. But if we can face - and
beat - an undefeated Iowa team in mid November, it might actually move us back to respectability. Unfortunately, I think
Dantonio finds a way to win at home. Spartans can still win the Big Ten which tells you just where the Big Ten is right
now. The champ may be a team that lost to Central Michigan at home. Sparty in a close one.)
(Pete: Iowa controls it's Rose Bowl and National Championship destiny. MSU will
put up a show for awhile but falls in the end, again. Herkie 28 - Sparty 17)
(Dr. Mark: IOWA - must win to stay highly ranked will fall big ,like us ,with a loss)
(Brent: Pick: Michigan State - Iowa's undefeated season comes to an end)
WINNER : Iowa
Oregon @
Washington
(Steven: This could well be the best matchup of the weekend. Washington could very easily pull
the upset, but somehow I think they come up short. Ducks walk over the Huskies 28-21.)
(Gregg: Oregon on a mission. Jake will have a great showing but it will not be enough. Ducks win in Seattle.)
(Rick: I still think Oregon is over-rated, but good enough to will this game. The Ducks by 10.)
(Pete: The USC win was a fluke. Oregon continues to work toward the Rose Bowl. Ducks 48 - Huskies 16)
(Brent: Pick: Oregon - Ugly uniforms rule the day)
WINNER : Oregon
Texas @
Missouri
(Pete: Texas will roll into the Big 12 championship game undefeated...as long as Colt McCoy stays healthy. UT 42 - UM 17)
(Rick: This is not going to be a fun game to watch, unless of course you are a longhorn fan. Texas by 20+.)
(Steven: Texas keep rolling along towards the title game against the winner of the SEC – TX wins 45-28.)
(Gregg: No let down for Texas after the OU win and they are not looking ahead to the Cowboys.
Texas begins their quest for a bid in the championship game. Sorry Bearcat fans)
(Brent: Pick: Texas - Mizzu keeps it close but comes up short)
(Dr. Mark: Texas - will relax for a little while now the Red River is over)
WINNER : Texas
