Last Week: For the second straight week, the results of our staff picks made us look like we know what we are talking about. Tim pulled off this week's 5-0, while everyone else was 4-1. Steven and Rick continue to lead the group with their record of 7-13. Are we getting better or are the games getting easier to predict? It is a lot like the OSU offense, did they really start to get it together with the 38 points against Minnesota or was this still a team of concern that only managed 7 points in the first half before the Golden Gophers just fell apart? The Buckeyes have one more week to get it together before they face a November that includes two top ten teams and their top rival.
This Week: The Aggies have got to be one of the worse teams to come into Ohio Stadium. This is one of the least disciplined Buckeye teams since Tressel has been coaching. I am very concerned this team is not going to take this game serious enough to do what they need to do to mature before they head to Happy Valley next week. The will win the game but will the lose another week of solid preparation for their November slate. Also, I am hoping that Saine is back but let's see more of Hall and Martin. For our other games, we start on Friday night as the Mountaineers head to Tampa to face South Florida. The Bulldogs could not beat Cincinnati in Raymond James Stadium, can they handle West Virginia? You can't look at this weekend without weighing in on the 'Largest Cocktail Party' as the Florida Gators try to stay on top the polls and the BCS as they face the Georgia Bulldogs in their annual clash. Georgia has struggled to replace Stafford and Moreno, we will see if they can find enough overcome the top team in the country. From the Big 12 South, Oklahoma State and Texas play for the driver's seat to the Big 12 Championship. Think anyone in Cincinnati will be cheering for the Cowboys? And finally, from the Pac-10, USC and Oregon, a couple one-loss teams meet, loser will be out of the National picture. Who says there is no playoff system? In the game, we will see if Pete Carroll can get his Trojans up for yet another big stage game. The Ducks and Coach Kelly have come a long way since their opening loss on the Blue Field. All of us picked the same teams for the first four games, so the difference will come with USC-Oregon.
Here we go - Good Luck to All - Gregg
2009
N. Mex St @
Ohio State
(Gregg: This is by far the easiest opponent of OSU's non-conference slate. The Scarlet & Gray need more than just a win. They need to get the offense working, which means finding a mean, nasty O-line. Otherwise, they will be overtaken by the Lions and Hawkeyes)
(Steven: It is not yet time to jump up and down saying that the Bucks have turned the corner and found their offense. Minnesota
gave OSU amazing starting field position with three scoring drives starting from inside Gopher territory. Once again, the defense
came up huge in creating the field position disparity. As for our resurgent running game, I applaud the efforts of Jordan Hall and
Jermil Martin. Whether due to a tired Minnesota defense, better blocking or just more effort, they both showed up our starting
running backs. With backups like these, who wouldn’t like to see a broader rotation? Martin came in and rushed especially hard
and effectively despite limited playing time. The Keith Byars resemblance is not limited to the big 41 on his jersey. He’s big and
he runs over people. Let’s see more! So, what happens this week? Much the same as last week with an overmatched
opponent. Let’s hope for another Minnesota game and not a Purdue performance. Calling for the shutout OSU 44-0.)
(Rick: Defense 21 – New Mexico State 3 with the final score 35 to 3, thank you special teams for the other 2 touchdowns.)
(Joe-S-U: OSU over New Mexico State- This must be the fifth game that Gregg struggled to find. How
about 25-30 carries for Jermil Martin? What would it hurt- besides the Aggies' defense?)
(Brent: Pick: OSU - Bucks roll Aggies and roll into the heart of their schedule)
(Pete: One last chance for the offense to finally gel before facing a brutal
November schedule. Bucks need some momentum. OSU 45 - NMS 6)
WINNER : Ohio State
WVU @
S Florida
(Joe-S-U: West Virginia over South Florida- 'Neers in the same boat as the Buckeyes- the rubber meets the road in November.)
(Pete: This isn't South Florida's year but the future is bright for the Bulls. Noel Devine is a beast of a running back for the
Mountaineers. West Virginia is the favorite but it's the Big East and it's anyone's game. WVU 32 - SFU 28)
(Steven: After a quick start USF has lost their last two. They’ve gotten into the meat of the Big East schedule and
found that it is tougher going against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh than Syracuse and Wofford. The meat of the
schedule now looks to be a meat grinder. WVU rolls over an overmatched Bull defense 38-24.)
(Gregg: Sometimes I still wonder sometimes how Coach Stewart keeps winning but then again he started his
tenure with a win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Yet South Florida does not look as strong as they
seemed on paper before the season started. Mountaineers in a solid win.)
(Rick: This is a hard one for me to pick. I think that South Florida can win at home,
but I am lead to believe that WVU will have a big 4th quarter to pull it out.)
(Brent: Pick: WVU - South Florida fading fast)
WINNER : South Florida
FL @
Georgia
(Steven: Tim Tebow marches to his coronation of the second two-time Heisman trophy winner. (I’d still take Colt McCoy over Tebow any day though). I have just not been impressed with Georgia this year. They have seemed to be on the cusp of making the leap from good to great, but they haven’t quite gotten there. I don’t see that this week will be any different. The Dawgs give them a game, but crumble in the end like the LSU game. Florida wins 28-17.)
(Joe-S-U: Florida over Georgia- It's starting to smell a lot like 2007 when the college football powers-that-be were going to make
sure come hell or high water that LSU was in that title game. Kind of like OSU/Pryor, everyone keeps waiting on the Gators to
break out and play like a #1 ranked team. Folks, it's too late. These guys spent the offseason reading their press, and they
are far from dominant. Enough talent to win out? Sure, but I wouldn't mind it being like New England two years ago- make
it all the way to the title game unscathed and get the rug pulled out from under you.)
(Gregg: I don't know about you but I have not been impressed with the Gators this year. I predict this game will be a lot
closer than most expect, but Florida finds a way. Maybe the Arkansas officials crew will be back off suspension by then.)
(Pete: Florida is on cruise control all the way to the SEC championship game. Gators stomp the Dawgs. UF 35 - UG 21)
(Brent: Pick: Florida - Gators rule world's largest cocktail party)
(Rick: No test here, FL vs. Texas in the title game. Florida by 14.)
WINNER : Florida
Texas @
OSU
(Joe-S-U: Texas over Oklahoma State- Mack Brown on a conversation with his mom right after Texas came from 35-7 down to beat
OK St 56-35 a couple of years ago- "I said 'Mom, how 'bout that comeback?' She said 'I'm sure it was a great halftime speech
but you should be more concerned with whatever you said to them before the game...' " )
(Pete: Like Florida, Texas is on cruise control headed into the Big 12 championship game. Just to put a cherry on top of
this game, Texas will be looking to stick it to the Cowboys for their stunning upset in Austin last year. UT 42 - 28)
(Steven: Mack Brown will have his folks up for this one. On other side, Oklahoma State will be prepared, but overmatched.
Texas is giving up a little over two touchdowns per game, but their scoring differential is close to four touchdowns. This
one stays close to the mold - Texas 38-21)
(Rick: Why does everyone think that this is even going to be a close game? Texas
makes a big statement to the country for its national championship bid.)
(Gregg: Like Florida, I don't think Texas has looked like a championship team
this season but they are good enough to beat the Cowboys.)
(Brent: Pick - Horns lasso Cowboys)
WINNER : Texas
USC @
Oregon
(Steven: I was very much down on the Ducks after the Boise State loss in the beginning of the year, but since then they have rallied and made the Pac 10 race interesting. Look for the Ducks to knock the crown off of Pete Carroll’s head this week. They will unfortunately have a much tougher time wiping ESPN’s lipstick off of his posterior. Ducks win, Ducks win!!! 28-20)
(Rick: This will be the best game of the weekend. I personally hope that I am wrong, but I think that USC will pull it out in the end.)
(Joe-S-U: Oregon over USC- With this one at Oregon, something tells me the Pac-10 officials won't be missing any
facemask calls on Taylor Mays or anyone in white. With the exception of Cincinnati, Oregon may be playing
better football right now than any other team in the country)
(Gregg: Expect a lot of scoring, but I think the Ducks win in the end head to the Rose Bowl. Is Blount
going to return this year? Can anyone imagine USC not even playing their bowl game in January?)
(Brent: Pick: USC - Trojans put it together and rout Ducks)
(Pete: Who wants to go to the Rose Bowl? The winner of this one will almost be assured
a spot in Pasadena on Jan. 1st. I'm calling for the upset. OU 28 - USC 26)
WINNER : Oregon
