Columbus QB Decides on Ohio State
December 16, 2009 10:00 pm EST
Verlon Reed, a dual-threat quarterback from Columbus Marion-Franklin High School has committed to Ohio State according to reports today. Reed chose OSU over Toledo and Bowling Green. He was blown away on his official visit last weekend. Rivals.com rates Reed as a three-star player, rated the No. 61 prospect in Ohio. The Buckeyes already have a quarterback in their 2010 class, Taylor Graham of Wheaton, Ill.
Last season, Reed led the Red Devils to an 11-3 record and a berth in the Division II state semifinals. He rushed for 1,395 yards and 19 TDs and passed for 1,548 yards and 18 TDs. There has been some speculation that Reed (6-2, 185) might switch positions in college, but he said OSU coaches have told him he will get a legitimate shot at quarterback.
Reed is the 15th member of the 2010 class, which is expected to number 20 by signing day.
Another Florida Receiver Commits to Ohio State

Wide receiver Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) committed to Ohio State at the conclusion to his official visit, Bucknuts.com reports. Some of the other schools he was considering included Miami-FL, Rutgers, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan State, Colorado, Notre Dame and Tennessee. Prior to his visit to Columbus for the USC game, it appeared he had Miami on the top of his list.
ESPN's Billy Tucker said of the news, "A tough Ohio State loss didn't deter Brown from pulling the trigger over the weekend and may have eased the pain for Buckeye fans. The exciting atmosphere surrounding his first visit to Columbus appears to have sealed the deal with the Pennsylvania native. OSU showed it had the speed and athleticism to compete with USC on Saturday night, but it still could use another highly skilled athlete on its future roster; Brown can do a bit of everything."
Brown brings a lot of speed and versatility to the table as a prospect and is likely getting recruited to Columbus as an athlete. We feel he has the skill-set to play running back at the next level but will most likely line up at wide receiver. He has great quickness, elusiveness and burst with the ball in his hands and could develop into a productive slot receiver for the Buckeyes with his ability to create mismatches in space. Will need some polish as a route runner but has soft hands, very good athleticism and explosiveness for the OSU staff to refine. Could be used creatively with his ability to motion in and out of the backfield; Brown's key to success at the next level will be his ability to add size and strength.
Brown had a huge sophomore season rushing for 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns but sustained a torn MCL early in his junior campaign.
Another Florida Receiver Commits to to Ohio State

Chad Hagan wasted no time after his final visit to Ohio State to make his decision, as the safety/running back became the 11th commitment to the 2010 recruiting class.
According to the quote from the Columbus Dispatch, Hagen stated "I wanted to commit for a long time, I just wanted to make sure it was the right place. I prayed about it last night, and thought about it a lot, and today was just a great day."
Hagan, 6 feet 2 and 230 pounds from Canonsburg, PA ran a 4.29-second 40-yard dash in March, and backed that up two weeks ago with a 4.33. He also had scholarship offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Syracuse and North Carolina State.

This year, the Buckeyes were fortunate enough to get Cris Carter's son Duron, out of Florida in their 2009 class. Receiver James Louis of Delray Beach, FL, surprisingly turned his back on his in-state schools and committed to Ohio State's 2010 recruiting class.
Louis, 5 feet 11 and 185 pounds from Atlantic High School, had offers from Florida and Florida State, as well as from Alabama, Georgia and LSU, among others. One reason the Buckeyes piqued his interest was their success in producing NFL receivers under assistant head coach Darrell Hazell.
Louis, the 10th member of the 2010 class, might be the only receiver in it. The Buckeyes are expected to have 16-18 commitments by signing day in February.
Buckeyes Secure a Kicker
July 3, 2009 12:30 pm EST
Drew Basil, a kicker-punter from Chillicothe is now the eighth commitment to the 2010 recruiting class. He indicated he had always been a Buckeye fan but his tour of campus clinched it for him. Basil, 6 feet 2 and 190 pounds, told coach Jim Tressel his decision in person. Though the Buckeyes project Basil primarily as a kicker (he was 8 of 12 on field-goal attempts last season), he had a 39.8-yard punting average.
Top Flight Running Back Commits to Ohio State
July 2, 2009 9:30 pm EST
Running back Roderick Smith of Fort Wayne (Harding), IN, becomes the seventh commitment to Ohio State's 2010 recruiting class. Smith, who was being sought by almost every school in the Big Ten, including Michigan State and Michigan, committed to coach Jim Tressel during an unofficial visit to the football facility.
A member of the ESPNU 150 watch list, Smith -- 6 feet 2 and 220 pounds -- is considered "a potential early impact player" by recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic because of his combination of power and speed. Smith rushed for more than 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.
Another Legacy Commits to the Buckeyes
June 23, 2009 6:00 pm EST
One has to go quite a ways back in the Buckeye rosters to find the last time we did not have the relative of a former player on the roster. In this decade alone the roster has included sons of former OSU greats like Jim Otis, Garcia Lane and even the genealogy of the immortal Chic Harley just to name a few. This fall we will add the son of Cris Carter to that list. As reported today Wheaton (IL) quarterback Taylor Graham will join that list. Son of Kent Graham, Taylor was one of the fastest rising stars in the Midwest. The 6-foot-4, 211-pounder had plenty of offers including one from Ohio State, but Graham ended the speculation today when he went on record with a commitment to his father's alma mater. - Gregg
Montana Heading to Washington
June 11, 2009 7:30 pm EST
Yesterday the super-recruit Nick Montana, son of NFL Hall of Fame Joe Montana, has finally chosen a school. Ohio State was among the long list of schools that heavily recruited the junior quarterback star. Jim Tressel even went as far as to promise Montana that he would not recruit any other quarterbacks for the 2010 class if he came to Ohio State.
To the surprise of most of us, Nick chose the University of Washington and while I am disappointed that he will not be wearing the Scarlet and Gray, I am pleased to know that now the Buckeyes can open the recruiting doors to other quarterbacks. Nick’s early commitment to the Huskies will allow Ohio State the freedom to look at other talent around the country and hopefully land a great quarterback that fits into the Buckeye mold.
Yes, I would have loved to seen him suit up for the Buckeyes but the early commitment is a best case scenario for Montana-less OSU. Hey, I’m a glass half full kind of guy, unless it’s beer. Then we have a problem. - Pete Quint
Texas Linebacker Adds his Name to the List of Buckeye Recruits
March 5, 2009 8:30 pm EST
Three weeks ago, we reported quarterback prospect Nick Montana, son of Super Bowl hero Joe Montana, was seriously interested in Ohio State, and vice versa. In the meantime, interest nationwide in the senior-to-be from Westlake Village (Oaks Christian), Calif., has grown substantially in terms of scholarship offers, inquiries from recruiting services and the like. Has all of the sudden attention left his mind spinning and racing?
“It’s pretty much a combination of that racing and spinning,” Montana said by telephone this week. “I’m still trying to figure everything out, still planning to take a couple more recruiting trips.” “Ohio State is definitely up there. You can tell those fans that.”
At this time, he has offers from schools across, including Florida State, Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio State, Notre Dame (his father’s alma mater), Nebraska, Stanford, and Arizona. USC has contacted him but not made an offer, as has Texas and Tennessee. His present plan is to make unofficial visits to Alabama, Florida State and Arizona in the next month or so.
It is obvious that he is not just Joe Montana's son. At 6 feet 3, 190 pounds with a great arm, poise and leadership abilities he finally got to show in leading his team on a 14-0 run in his first year as the starter, he’s a big-time prospect.
Texas Linebacker Adds his Name to the List of Buckeye Recruits
February 23, 2009 5:30 pm EST
The Buckeyes lost to the Longhorns last month in the Fiesta Bowl but they were able to land one the state's top recruit. David Durham, a 6' 3" , 226 lb linebacker announced today that we will be a part of the Buckeye's Class of 2010. Presently he attends Westlake HS in Austin, TX. He had also received offers from West Virginia and Virginia.
The linebacker first saw the OSU campus and made contact with the coaches three weeks ago when he was in town for a wrestling camp. Having already sent a football highlight tape to the Buckeyes, Durham and his wrestling team was on campus to check out the Steelwood Training Facility when his coach contacted the OSU coaching staff. That contact set the wheels in motion that led to Durham landing a scholarship from the Buckeyes. After going to campus and meeting with OSU linebackers coach Luke Fickell, Durham and his father kept in contact during the ensuing weeks. Finally, during the morning of Feb. 23, Fickell let Durham know the Buckeyes were giving him a scholarship offer.
He accepted on the spot, becoming verbal commitment No. 4 for OSU’s class of
OSU Reports Third Verbal For the Class of 2010
February 13, 2009 4:00 pm EST
Ohio State did not get the high profile quarterback they were looking for in the Class of 2009. With any luck, they will be able to land a big fish for the Class of 2010. Nick Montana has never been to Ohio State, but from afar the quarterback and second son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Montana likes what he sees. That's why he's flying in for a closer look Monday and Tuesday.
Montana has indicated he likes the coaches and environment at Ohio State. And he certainly recognizes the quality of the program year in and year out. The Buckeyes already have offered the senior-to-be a scholarship to be part of the 2010 recruiting class, as have LSU, South Carolina, Stanford and California, to name a few. Texas, Alabama and Tennessee are said to be leaning toward an offer.
Montana, 6 feet 3 and 190 pounds, led Oaks Christian to a 14-0 record and a 2008 state title in his first season as the starter after he transferred from Concord De La Salle. He threw 33 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions last season, and he barely played in the second half of nine of the games because of blowouts. He is not like Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State's running-throwing quarterback, but Montana said he has been impressed with Tressel's ability for adjusting his offense to suit the quarterback.
"I caught a pretty good amount of their games last year and the year before, and I really like their offense," Montana said. "I think it would be a pretty good match."
But he's promising nothing. With a week off from school, he is going to visit Texas after Ohio State, and he would like to work in a visit to Alabama and Tennessee because he expects to make his decision before the upcoming season. His older brother, Nate, last year walked on at Notre Dame, where their father starred before moving on to the San Francisco 49ers. Nick has shown a preference to go elsewhere.
OSU Reports Third Verbal For the Class of 2010
February 5, 2009 8:00 pm EST
No sooner had OSU closed the book on the Class of 2009, sources reported their third commitment for the class of 2010. Offensive lineman Andrew Norwell of Cincinnati Anderson has decided on OSU. Recruiting analyst Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.com said he predicts Norwell will be among the top five overall prospects in the state.
Turner From Youngstown Chooses OSU
December 18, 2008 10:30 pm EST
Defensive end Jamel Turner of Youngstown (Ohio) Ursuline became the second member of Ohio State’s class of 2010 when he pledged his services to OSU. Turner, a 6-2, 200-pound prospect with 4.78 speed in the 40-yard dash, becomes the second member of the class behind fellow Youngstown native J.T. Moore, who attends Boardman High School. Moore, a four-star outside linebacker, became the first member of OSU’s class in September just days after he officially received his offer.
Turner, who made 23 sacks as a sophomore, visited Ohio State to see the Buckeyes battle Penn State on October 25th. He was named to Scout’s All-Ohio Championship team for this year’s state championships as Ursuline won the state title.
